The time for real work and real change begins

MCA election is over.

To my comrades, friends, supporters and everyone from this virtual network, I sincerely thank you for the words of encouragement and support.

My achievement in winning the MCA deputy presidency has been a most humbling experience in that it comes with the responsibility of carrying the hopes of all MCA members in rejuvenating our party.

While we must close ranks and come together after a most competitive campaign, all of the winning candidates must remember what was promised to the grassroots and to the delegates.

We must be their agent of change in the party and in the country. We must bring about the real change desired of the party.

The members have spoken. The message is loud and clear. They have rejected empire building. They have rejected a weak leadership. They want a more vocal leadership. The members want to have an equal say in how the Barisan Nasional government is administered. We are not here to challenge Umno, but we must become partners again in governance.

I pledge to set aside all differences and work closely with all the members of the senior leadership, including the newly elected president Datuk Ong Tee Keat. I want to make one thing clear. The real work lies ahead. The MCA must strive towards giving a greater voice not just to the Chinese community but to all ordinary Malaysians.

We must work hard to change the negative perception a substantial number in the Chinese community have of us. We cannot just change MCA but also work to reform BN.

We must work hard to bring about the kind of reforms necessary to regain support from all Malaysians not just for MCA but for BN as a real multi-racial coalition which represents all Malaysians regardless of race and creed.

We must become a real political party again to make real political changes within BN. That is what the people of Malaysia demand. They want better and cleaner governance. We must start by ensuring all of the MCA's ministers run the most efficient and most effective ministries.

In these economically trying times, Malaysians want to see a government that works for them. We in the MCA must being the forefront of ensuring an efficient and effective government.

The time for politics is over. The time for real work and for real change begins.

Meanwhile, I will be off from blogging for 2 weeks. I need time to recharge my battery.

I've won as MCA Deputy President

Tonight is a memorable night for me as I've won as MCA Deputy President. I sincerely thank all my supporters for their enormous support.

With all party members' support and cooperation, we now need to re-unite and reform the party. All elected leaders must work hand in hand to fulfill their promises to party members as well as the rakyat.

Once again, I thank all central delegates for their votes.

MCA delegates must reject empire building

As we come to the end of campaigning for the MCA elections, it is now up to the delegates to make their choices.

I hope they will choose wisely in what is the most crucial and important election for the MCA in its history.

We have been rejected by a significant portion of society.

As such, we need to rejuvenate and re-invent ourselves. I hope the delegates should consider that when they make their decisions.

Who among the candidates, best represent change? Who has offered the best ideas for reform and rebranding of the party?

Who can bring about real change to bring back support for the party?

I hope I have done enough to convince the delegates and members that I will bring about this real change demanded by the voters of Malaysia.

I urge delegates to reject empire building in MCA. It is precisely such manipulations which have contributed to the perception that the MCA is corrupt.

Once a leader says he bears responsibility for party losses in the elections, then he should really retire.

What is the idea of putting in place a list of candidates whom he can control?
Is that real change?

Surely this cannot be acceptable.

If you are retiring then go. Why is there such a need to hold on to power by being the power behind the throne?

Such is the greed for power that the endorsed candidate who used to fight against such manipulation previously has already accepted the arrangement.

Then by the next term, the brother can take over perhaps?

So while the party and Barisan Nasional continue to suffer, the outgoing leadership of the MCA continues politics as usual by sharing the spoils.

Is this the kind of party we the delegates want?
I want to change the perception of the party from being known as Umno apologists to become again an equal partner in the ruling BN coalition.

The MCA must have its voice heard again. It is not a party where we share government spoils among ourselves.

We must champion universal issues which concern all Malaysians, from education to good governance, from corruption to justice.

These are the challenges ahead of us.

So the choice is clear.

Real change or old politics.

The Ban by MCMC towards NTV7’s Live Telecast of the MCA Deputy Presidential Debate

The decision by the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to ban the live telecast of the MCA deputy presidential debate over NTV7 last night has come as a great shock.

One would have thought that following the recent debates on television involving no less a figure as Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim that there would be no issue of allowing last night's debate to be televised.

Even Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's debate with Tan Sri Koh Tsu Koon was televised live.

Malaysians have shown they are receptive to this new political culture.

A new level of maturity had arrived in which political rivals can debate issues in a sober and competitive fashion.

There is no reason why the debate involving MCA candidates should not be allowed.

There seems to be black hands at work behind the scene.

By banning the live telecast, MCMC has robbed Malaysians and not just Chinese Malaysians, of an opportunity to get to know what candidates for a senior post of a major political party stand for.

It would have offered Malaysians a glimpse at how these candidates perform, and listen to what they have to offer.

Crucially, delegates to this weekend's MCA elections would have had a chance to listen to the candidates before deciding on who they should vote for.

I call on the MCMC to allow the debate to be shown without any further adue.

The MCMC must also give an answer as to why they have banned the live telecast of the debate.
