Proposal is to attract FDIs, says MCA president

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek has told police that his speech at the Chinese Economic Congress was very clear about increasing foreign investment in the country.

He said the congress, organised by the party on Aug 14, was aimed at exploring ways to liberalise the country’s economy and make it more competitive to attract foreign direct investments (FDIs).

“It was done in the spirit of 1Malaysia and to improve our country’s competitiveness in the world arena.

“We need FDIs and there must be ways to attract the inflow,” he stressed.

Dr Chua was at the Dang Wangi police station yesterday to give his statement on the congress.

He had proposed a gradual reduction of the 30% bumiputra equity and its replacement with a price preference system.

Perkasa secretary-general Syed Hassan Syed Ali lodged a police report on Aug 18 claiming that Dr Chua’s proposal could incite public anger and unrest, and that he should be investigated under the Sedition Act.

When asked if he stood by what he had said at the congress, Dr Chua said: “It is not a question of standing firm on what I said. I have given my speech to them (police) and my speech is very clear.

“I have no ulterior motive to stir racial issues.”

He said he was advocating that bumiputras be given price preferences in certain economic sectors when the economy was liberalised for open tender.

Dr Chua also pointed out that a price preference system was better than the 30% equity if the country wanted to develop its economy through innovation and creativity.

He said although it might be easier to meet the equity for the development of land or factories, this could not apply to innovation- or creativity-based development.
