KUALA LUMPUR: MCA has proposed that the Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) be abolished while the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) be retained with some changes.
Its president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said UPSR should make up only 30% of students’ overall grading and the rest should be based on assessment by schools.
“The Education Ministry should introduce a standard procedure to monitor the assessment to be conducted by the schools,” he said after chairing the MCA presidential council meeting here yesterday.
Dr Chua said the party came to that conclusion after holding discussions and dialogues with various parties and the public.
On the controversy regarding the setting up of non-Muslim clubs in secondary schools, Dr Chua said a circular on the matter which was issued 10 years ago should be cancelled.
He said the MCA would raise the issue when it meets Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to discuss education matters.
