Roaring start to 1MCA fundraiser

GENTING HIGHLANDS: The 1MCA Medical Foundation fundraising has received a “fantastic response” from the public with some RM2mil raised within three days of MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek’s announcement of its establishment.

“There are people who realise that they need to contribute as part of their social responsibility to help the poor,” Dr Chua said.

In announcing the setting up of the foundation on Tuesday, the president said the party had initially targeted to raise RM5mil over the next two months.

“We did not want to be ambitious so we set a target of RM5mil because I don’t believe in setting targets which cannot be achieved.

“But the fact is that within three days, I personally raised RM2mil just through phone calls,” he said after giving a talk at the Selangor MCA Cadres Brainstorming Campaign here yesterday.

Dr Chua added that other MCA ministers and deputy ministers would also do their part.

He said most MCA divisions had stepped forward to help, and many had reported receiving many amounts.

“Any amount is welcomed. We want our members to be involved and the rakyat to participate. This is for the good of the poor and the underprivileged.

“And we want to help all races because disease has no respect for race or colour. Anybody can get ill,” said Dr Chua.

Regarding Selangor, Dr Chua said the MCA and its Barisan Nasional partners were prepared to do battle to wrest the state back from Pakatan Rakyat.

He added that the chaotic situation in PKR’s leadership tussle could benefit the coalition.

On party matters, the president said he was happy to see that the morale of MCA members was high and they were in a fighting spirit, something which had been missing in the past one-and-a-half years.

Dr Chua added that internal issues in the MCA were “more or less settled.”
