SAPP’s motion of no confidence against the Prime Minister is one from the high political drama. But it is unlikely to lead to a mass defection on Barisan Nasional’s partnership. SAPP has only 2 members of Parliament and 4 state assemblymen in Sabah. So pulling out of BN draws a lot of attention and it only serves to shake UMNO. But BN will be continuing in power.
In this context, a favorite question is why MCA not leaving BN?
MCA’s association with UMNO has a long history dating back to pre-independence. Through thick and thin MCA, MIC has been with UMNO. In the post 308 change political landscape, MCA has been often been accused as a running dog of UMNO. The younger generation has forgotten the early days of Malaya and the later days of Malaysia, It was through a close collaboration of MCA, MIC and UMNO that provided a solid foundation of 3 major races to work together. This formed the basis of the political and social stability in this country.
Unfortunately this is often been disregarded and dismissed by many younger generations that MCA like to live on the past glory and forget the future challenges. There is a tendency of taking for granted the social cohesion and stability which is in reality is fragile. MCA leaving BN is a big issue that needs detail deliberation. When we leave the government and the cabinet, who looks after the Chinese interest? Will PAS, DAP or PKR who has no representation in the cabinet be able to do so? It is often easier said than done.
While we may not be performing up to the expectation of the Chinese but this crucial role should not be taken lightly. I have the opportunity to serve at the state cabinet as EXCO for 3 terms and Federal Cabinet Minister nearly 1 term, my concern is if MCA leave BN, can MCA stand alone? Even DAP found it difficult and has to join forces with PAS and PKR.
I have said many times, can we trust PAS? Work with the devil you know than the devil you don’t know. Until we are clear and sure the long term objective of PAS, we will not, and should not be comfortable sleeping with PAS. Not many people are aware that PAS has the biggest organization, better resources and more members than PKR which very Anwar centric. Until then, MCA will still remains with BN and together we weather the storm.
In the post 308 we have seen the likely emergence of the 2 party systems in this country. In the long term its good for the Rakyat. However, if everybody condemn and desert BN, again we are left with one party system, the PKR. So don’t be too euphoric. While BN may have messed up and not performed to the expectation, PR is still untested. Choose the partner that you know with all its defects and deficiencies, or a partner who is untested and of unknown quality? Be rational in our thinking and not be too emotional. We may be jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

As far as I am concerned, it is still BN for me. What we need is just more bargaining chips and unless we are strong and consolidated, we are not able to do that.
We can't even trust those Umno Muslims who are in our own camp, let alone trust those outside the camp. Have you guys forgot about those hudud laws that were proposed? In Saudi where hudud laws were practised, they cut off the thief's hand if caught stealing. Can't imagine if they caught you with another Muslim woman in bed. Sorry, doc..bad joke.
But the point here is that our Chinese culture and way of life cannot be put at risk at the hands of PAS. It is easy to know and handle Umno who are more interested in money. It is those who are not interested in money or anything that get me worried.
MCA fighting for the Chinese? That must be a joke. First of all MCA contributed so little to the Chinese, their existence is not justifiable. Second is that, we dont need a party to fight for Chinese. Thats a racist mindset. We need a party that fights for the well beings of all races. We dont need history lesson here about MCA. MCA might had been instrumental then. But MCA today is a sham. Leaders are either weak, or cower in fear or suspiciously corrupted. Yes, one might call this baseless accusations. But from the way I see it, when MCA enjoyed the support of the Chinese, they brag about it. When they lost much Chinese support, you say we forgot about MCA past contributions. Let me remind you that attitude like this that had made MCA walk 2 steps back. And by the way SAPP only have 2 Parliment seats and not 3. Feel free to correct that posting.
SAPP has 2 MPs and 4 ADUNs
Dr,MCA can't afford to just sit idle and let umno do the bashing.Being the second biggest component party we definitely have some bargaining power. But what we always see the need for MCA to respond to all the nasty accusations instead MCA kept quiet. To ask to be fairly treated is not a sin.We chinese don't demand for equal rights which I think we also should. If the President of MCA cannot ensure that we chinese are being treated fairly then he has fail in his duty.I just only ask that we be treated FAIRLY.Is that too much?
oh my god!! trying to put the fear factor again into the people's mind. sorry-lah it won't work anymore. See for yourself the result of the last GE. Besides, why deny another party a chance? After all, the present one SUCKS!!!!! and as i have mentioned before, MCA will always remain loyal to BN because why should they want change when they have benefitted so much from BN?
Tak payah-lah cakap banyak banyak. Its all cari makan.
dr chua
sorry to say this..dr chua u might be wrong.Malaysia is a Islamic Country and u must be more sensitive in this issue. Your party intention is good which is MCA take a responsibility on the chinese rigths. But plz! dont presume PAS as a devil party. Both MCA n PAS has a big difference political ideology n Most Malaysian understand and accept it as a opposition party which deserve to fight base on Islamic rules.U should not to say that!!
For some it may be shadow-playing drama
Some others may merely regard it as 'karma'
A few strictly want all evidences in camera
Afterall, all crooks are almost just the same, 'sama-sama'

True... SAPP's motion of no confidence against that dumbo PM is not going to shake anything. BN will continue to rule and flinch all of us. But of all the parties we have, I must say SAPP truly has the GUTS to say what they want to say.
As for MCA, well, what can I say? No guts is an understatement! All those talks about how MCA's association with UMNO has a long history dating back to zaman dulu, how a close collaboration of MCA, MIC and UMNO has provided a solid foundation of 3 major races to work together and this formed the basis of the political and social stability in the country is nothing but reminiscent of the past! What about those abuse MCA or rather, the chinese suffered at the hands of UMNO? What about those arrogant and bias attitude towards the Chinese? What are those!?
To reminiscent the past glory days as a team is liken to an abused spouse beaten black and blue telling how good and perfect his/her partner was and could still be if given a chance. Still holding on to that imaginary hope/chance that the glory days will be back is a sure sign of weakness. Denial and being weak will eventually kill the abused spouse. Same here with MCA.
That theory about working with the devil you know rather than the devil you dont know and PR being not tested.. well, there will come a time to try the untested or perhaps work with an unknown devil. No gamble no gain... We are already hitting rock bottom real soon with BN, how further bad can we get if we are to try the untested or the devil we don't know?
Yes, we may be euphoric for the moment but after the bitter lesson of being "abused" by BN for so long, most of us know what to do when the untested don't toe the line or don't deliver. We have regained our confidence and redeem our rights. We are no longer that sad abused spouse because we took the courage to walk i.e. chose the path that is untested and of unknown quality.
Well, dr, i understand what u hav been saying n worrying. Of course, in ur (MCA) position, it is not de best time to leave BN yet. But what I emphasis here is - YOU O SHOULD NOT BACK UMNO NOW TOO!!
What is de use to stretch UMNO back when Yong Teck Lee decided on no confidence motion. U o can just keep quiet and say "we ll continue monitor de situation."
Bt what people out there (esp CHinese) tak tahan is MCA still shout it loud that "we support UMNO!!" never 4get UMNO does not really treat u well. If u show ur "loyalty" now oso u won't get anyting better in return.
U o hav misjudge and misbehave in dis incident.
Hey funniman1965! You really talk funny lah!
You'd rather crawl into bed with UMNO because you think they are only interested in material riches? Islam is not the least bit important to them? Just take a good look around you. Every Malay, be it a PAS or UMNO man, is deeply sensitive to the Islam religion. Maybe an UMNO man won't be seen wearing a jubah or his kopiah 24/7 as often as a PAS man would, but that UMNO man too would defend the honour of Islam as fervently as his PAS counterpart.
As it is now, UMNO is surely playing the Islam tune to the hilt.
Who is the one who slowly turned our schools into an Islamic playground? Who is the one who condoned religous body snatching? Even for the Carrefour counter check-out Malay girl to touch properly packed dog food is haram! Since we are on a roll, let's not forget who ordered Jawi names on road names in Taman Seputeh. The list could go on...
You sure you still want to sleep with UMNO? You sure your Chinese culture is not at risk when you cozy up to UMNO?
Which sounds better
PASS or PUS ???
Dear Dr. Chua,
President Ong already showed that he support the BN and will not betray PM. What if you are the president, what will you do?
God Bless.......................
G'mor Dr.
You are extremely right when you say MCA n MIC was with umno during thick or thin situation but umno failed to give a due respect to this two loyal friend. When they are in full power it's never cross their mind on BN spirit but now even when SAPP throw out the open challenge they do not dare to take any actions and talking nonsense about BN spirit. If they have give a respect to this two party and treat them equally I dont think the Indians and Chinese will decide to shoo away BN. But then I do feel it's MCA n MIC weakness too when they fail to get the deserve respect from umno. They should stand to say no to umno stupid agenda but then ...... now it's too late......
"Choose the partner that you know with all its defects and deficiencies, or a partner who is untested and of unknown quality? Be rational in our thinking and not be too emotional. We may be jumping from the frying pan into the fire."
When you have been through hell, everything else is a bonus.
When you have hit rock-bottom and down in the pits, up is only one way to go.
Not so much of the 50 years under BN, but especially the last 30 years under BN, it has been nothing but unpleasant. Even if the next guy who wins the election is a KAYU, a dungu, an inexperience chap, I'd still prefer him to the present govt.
Like I said, when you have been through hell, anything else is a welcome change.
Dear All,
MCA has been moving around with the notion that they are fighting for the Chinese in Malaysia as long as we can remember. During the early days they were fighting along side with UMNO and later joined by MIC for independence. The objective of having a tripartite government was probably the order of the day then. Of course, I believe many of the yesteryears leaders were also interested in the distribution of portfolios after achieving independence. It is foolish to believe that this notion does not ranked high on their list then. However, there are some Chinese politicians who were probably more interested in the business opportunity presented to them after independence. If one care to investigate deeper, you will notice that MCA wasn't given the second top post in the cabinet despite being the second largest component party. They opted for finance instead as the reason appeared obvious. For 12 years prior to May 69, the MCA leaders then were too busy looking into their own biz interests then to fight for the Chinese. A lady told me that in 1957 to 1963, droves of Chinese were shipped back to China due to inability of obtaining citizenship. Chinese were hard pressed to get the "kong man tin" aka status permastautin then as many may be illiterate and lack of avenues and strings to pull for speedy application. Where were MCA then? Of course MCA could have stop those leaving Malaya then.
Post 69 had demonstrated to us that MCA was emasculated and the Finance Minister post being snatched away right under their nose. They were too soft to say anything then. Come to think of it, maybe MCa wanted to teach the Chinese a lesson for voting opposition and create a story that they lost the post due to lack of support from the community that they dearly defended. The rest is history.
MCA top dog is holding the Housing Ministerial and others are just holding unimportant and menial posts. Sad to say but MCa has always been using the cooperation of three parties i.e. UMNO, MCA and MIC as their top storyline. Time has changed and I think it is best that they reinvent themselves with the Chinese population dwindling fast. It would have been helpful if those droves were not sent off back in 57 to 63.

Dr, I'm very critical of the way MCA is been led not by Mr Ong Ka Ting alone but by umno whose LEASH is not only getting SHORTER but getting TIGHTER.One day it will be so short that mca can't move,so tight that mca can't bark anymore.
funniman. You are bordering the line of hatred in your comments. Why exactly are you grouping "umno muslims" in one category.
If we really want to make this malaysian for malaysia thing, or anything along those lines. THAT is one attitude that should be banished from your head. From ALL malaysians heads to say the least.
How long can the MCA play the devil you know is better than the devil you don't? There is also the flip side.
People who know you support them irrespective will take you for granted. The role of MCA in the BN has deteriorated over the last two decades.
Is the MCA going to be just happy to be a token in a coalition, and continue to corrode because demographically the number of Chinese citizens is dropping?
Some of the examples in MCA like Dtk. Ling Liong Sik, Ong Ka Ting and Chan Kong Choy they all SUCKS....
Actually from what we observed is that MCA never fight for Chinese they are just chained by UMNO and walk along like dogs..Sorry to say this..because we lost confidence with MCA unless it is revamp and changed completely from the bottom ground. We don't trust the old folks (the Seniors).
Malaysian Chinese have contributed so much and hard survived for so many years. Without Chinese Boleh where is Malaysia now??? Mainly because Chinese are main financial contributors for Malaysia even during the earlier days..
MCA just let racist issue continue to whip upon our Chinese buttocks. Why shall we derserves these???
Does any leaders in MCA protect the dignity of our Chinese community when those racist holligans speaks and shouted in Parliament to ask Chinese to go back to Tong Shan???
Without Yap Ah Loy where is Kuala Lumpur today???
Without Cheng Her where is Melaka??
Without Hang Tuah (Hang is the Surname of Ang and Tuah is a Hokkien word stands for The Eldest Brother in the family of Ang) will Parameswara able to conquer during Siam's attack???
Chinese have long time landed in the land of Kelantan before Malacca..and those Chinese at that time are mostly Chinese Islamic. Therefore Batik is actually the warisan from China so as the Wayang Kulit (similiar as the Puppet show in China).
With due respect, I must correct Nur’s statement that Malaysia is an Islamic state. It is not. Malaysia is a secular state, but Islam is the national religion. Further, it is wrong to say that non Muslims do not respect Islam; we all do, and in all aspects of our daily life.
Back to Chee Yong, he fails to understand that over the years, if not for the presence of MCA within the BN government, the Chinese would have faired even worse than what we are today. That said, it does not mean we are totally satisfied or happy with MCA. Much more needs to be done. These days, the younger generation Chinese largely feels disillusioned with MCA, and is easily carried away by the inflammatory slogans and speeches of DAP, even PAS. Imagine DAP working with PAS where these 2 parties having totally diametrically opposite policies and ideologies? It is only a marriage of convenience, loosely bonded by Anwar Ibrahim, whom I always think and judge him a schematic and dangerous man.
To me, the MCA has done a great deal in the last several years; its set-back in the GE12 was largely due to the hegemonic and “big brother” attitude of UMNO. It was not so much the voters, I mean non-Malay voters, were angry with MCA, more so because they were angry with UMNO. UMNO needs to do a soul searching and change its attitude if BN still hopes to win in the next general election, or else, with the sweeping change of voter’s mindset, BN may well be swept away totally by the sea change of voters’ frustration.
I quote the view of a political analyst on failure of BN component parties in Chinese: “國陣成員黨在308大選中失利,很大程度是因巫統的一黨獨大和政治霸權造成,而不是其他國陣成員黨的表現不好. “ That says it all.
Why voters were so angry with BN in GE12? To name a few “killing factors: The Lingan video tape on judiciary scandal; the Zakaria mansion in Klang due to total disregard of laws and order and the government’s turning a blind eye on it; blatant corruption; UMNO arrogance; issue of ketuanan Melayu; feeling of insecurity due to rampant robberies and rapes and the police’s total inability to provide peace and security, etc etc. They saw a ray hope in PR and the charisma of Anwar Ibrahim, with the implication of Hindraf, so went the results of GE12.
In fact if you ask any non Malay, few are asking for help or special treatment from the government; all we want is fairness to us all, and do it transparently. We will survive on our own, no matter how.
Dr Chua,
Nobody and no any single party is invincible in this world. In Malaysia as in the case of the Malays, Chinese and Indians. Without UMNO, Malays can still survive with PKR or PAS. Without MCA, Chinese will still be very much alive having DAP. Without MIC, Indians will still be around with the support of HINDRAF.
So, don't ever think that UMNO, MCA and MIC are that great and invincible that we Malaysians will perish without them. Mindset automatically changes when things around change. And for GOD's sake, please don't ever dig out again the old stale stories already known to many. What we see and possess today are entirely so different from what were of those earlier days.
A good quote from Chee Yong ....
'We dont need history lesson here about MCA. MCA might had been instrumental then. But MCA today is a sham. Leaders are either weak, or cower in fear or suspiciously corrupted'.
My comment is simple:
To know a devil is a lot more better than not to know an angel.
And I know Umno is the devil...but I would rather take my chance with them than to try with others. Reason is that we just cannot afford to take chances...there's too much risks.
By the way, Islam is NEVER part of this discussion. Extremists are.
Dr.
From your article, my sixth sense tells me that what you are writing is for us to read only and not really your opinion.... You are rather clever and shrewd because BIG BROTHER is also reading your blog.
You have to be on their good book and hoping to jump back into BN wagon!!!
Please tell us what you can do for the Chinese in Malaysia?
Your Vision for the Chinese and also your personal agenda.
With your enemy behind your back I foresee a difficult and frustatiing climb to the top again ... I see the cunning and smooth talking Chua Jui Meng is also testing the water..
What is your Chance???
Better jump ship and be known as a brave man who change the course for the Chinese then be branded as a opportunist politican.
Hei, Camon, you are damn right. Over the weeks, I notice Dr. Chua's blog and his opinion still reflect very much that of BN.
Dr. Chua, of course there is nothing wrong in defending BN's policies, but we also need to see more of your own assessment of the country's future and the best way for the Chinese. defend MCA's policies at your best if these policies and strategies stand the test.
No matter what, I still find this forum a useful place for us to tell you, the MCA and the BN bid brothers (if they care to read your blog) what we think.
For one thing, please update your bog more regularly. I notice sometimes it takes as long as more than 18 hours for an opinion to be published. If you have no time to monitor the blog, get some one full time to do it. Otherwise this blog may not be useful or meaningful as a place for opinion exchange.
You know why Lim Kit Siang's blog is so popular? besides his fiery articles, the blof is updated very regularly.
Everyone notices that a day after SAPP's Yong Teck Lee vowed to move a vote of no confidence on PM Abdullah, the ACA said it would investigate on a corruption charge on Yong. What a mean and dirty tactic it is!
I view this from 2 angles. Firstly, the ACA may give the whole world of reasons and say this is only a coincidence, who will believe it? Second, if the charges are true, it means the ACA has been sleeping in the past, or we can only say the reason it did not investigate on Yong Teck Lee was because until recently, Yong was still supportive of BN. The moment he goes against the BN, all kinds of charges will be levelled on him.
The ACA is really stupid enough to do this bad timing to give the public a bad image of itself, which is already down the drain, if it still has any ctredibility.
Does it mean that even if you are corrupt, but if you support BN, we will not investigate on you? So all those BN guys who are corrupt (you know it too well yourself), you better continue to kiss BN's ass.
Abdullah should give the ACA director a better piece of advice, since the ACA only reports to him.
Soi Lek,
In today's (June 23) STAR, Ka Chuan said and I quote:
"Barisan may be stronger without SAPP"
This is exactly what is wrong with MCA (or its current leaders) - talking from the orifice at your southern end!
If SAPP is no big deal, why all the hoo-hah over the Party leaving BN, why the threat, curse and critism from all your BN leaders, why the instant 'coincidental' ACA investigation on Yong?
As long as MCA continue to have leaders like the Ong Brothers, Chee Yeoung, Yen Yen and Mei Fun, (and Carol, oh my God!, please lah, save us the humiliation) I don't see the Party going far - I, for one will never give MCA my vote!
Also please don't call PAS a 'devil party' until you have trully taken the initiative to get to know their leaders, especially well-learned and articulate chaps like Husam, Sallehudin Ayub and Kamaruddin Jaffar. Even veteran leaders lkie Tok Guru Nik Aziz, Hadi and Mustafa have shown a lot of moderation lately in their approach towards the sensitivities of our multi-cultural polpulace.
Doc! remember the song - 'To know me, is to love me'. Let's not be partisan and shut our minds to the possibility of a progressive, just and united Malaysia.
