Do Not Let Nation Building be Derailed by Scholarship Quota

Khairy’s statement calling for Agung’s interference in the ratio of JPA scholarship of 55:45 (bumiputera : non-bumiputera) is truly unjustifiable and could create frustration and disillusionment among the top Malaysian students who are truly in need of financial aid.

As we had just celebrated 50 years of independence, more effort is needed to mould and cultivate Malaysians to truly think more independently and speak as a true & mature citizen. Malaysians especially the younger generations need to cultivate an agile mind and to prepare themselves for a global environment. When the world is already borderless and accepted the meritocracy system, Malaysians need to gear and prepare themselves to be competitive globally too. Otherwise, it will lead to more brain drain in our country and it is our country that is truly on the losing end.

The Constitution has ensured enough provision of places for higher education to train undergraduates. It doesn’t state the ratio of scholarship. This ratio can be changed to meet the need as time pass. If the bumiputera can compete with others confidently in future, it can even be disregarded later.

I agreed when one of my Malay learned friends said that Malaysians truly need to understand the scope of Article 153 in the Constitution because it has caused division within our pluralistic Malaysian community, as that particular article does not violate the principle of equality. Apart from the provisions allowed under Article 153, all citizens of Malaysia must be treated as equals as guaranteed under Article 8.

Thus scholarship award need to be allocated to the group of best students who are Malaysians and deserving so that their efforts are recognized and further encouraged to contribute to the growth of nation building. The present ratio is also a concerted effort achieved by the cabinet in recent few years to rectify the past ratio which was loop sided for too long.

It is not unconstitutional to give scholarship to the best students who are truly in need of financial aid no matter whether they are bumiputera and non-bumiputera. Furthermore, there are many other scholarships offered by state or federal government, or by government linked agencies or foundations other than JPA that give scholarship to more than 90% to bumiputera.

At this juncture, I am being reminded what Dr. Martin Luther King delivered in his famous address ‘I have a dream’ on 28 August 1963, at the Lincoln Memorial, Washington D.C., that one day, his children would live in a nation where they would not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.

Thus, it is the Malaysians hope and desire to see that leaders in their speech, thought and action, will not cause the effort of nation building to be derailed.

The government can help the Bumi students but it must not deprived the non-Bumi their educational opportunities.

MCA, HAVING LOST SO BADLY IN THE PREVIOUS ELECTIONS, OUGHT TO SHUT ITS MOUTH. IT HAS NO RIGHT TO SPEAK ON BEHALF OF MALAYSIAN CHINESE ANYMORE! ANYWAY, WE DON'T NEED BOOTLICKERS LIKE YOU.

Doesn't this Khairy fella realize that Malaysia is probably the only country in the world to have earned the dubious distinction of favouring and designing affirmative policies for the majority, which is going on now for more than 3 decades?

What good has this quota system done for the malays and the bumis in terms of efficiency, competitiveness, langguage mastery and self confidence. It has only eroded all these qualities in them compared to those bumis who qualified before the advent of this quota system.Yet another dubious distinction for our nation in churning out sub-standard graduates in great numbers.

There is no one single leader amongst the malays who is sincere enough to evolve a system whereby these bumi graduates could be trained to become world beaters. All they are interested in are the numbers, doesn't matter about quality.

To make it worst the nation has lost hundreds of brilliant brains mainly to western nations.Dont these racist government realize that human capital is a very important asset for a nation?

Apart from these JPA scholarships the govt has so many other programs exclusively for the bumis, namely MARA scholarships,GLC scholarships for foreign degree programs,Foundation programs in several local universities some of them exclusively for bumis.

So why raise so much of hue and cry for the mere 45%, that to for brilliant non-bumis who will be contributing to nation building?
Why have such siege mentality and keep lowering your intelligence forever? When are they going to realize that the bumis are infact losing out alot and one day will be left out of the rat race as the world is becoming more and more competitive, fast paced and globalized? We need quality human capital and not sub-standard and low self-esteemed individuals,or else the country will be doomed.

So what is the MCA,MIC,PPP,GERAKAN going to do about this, since these fellas in these parties claim since independence that they are our guardian angels?

How about you Datuk Seri? What did you do when you were in the govt? What would you do now? And what can you do if at all you become a cabinet minister again?

Thank You and Regards.

Malaysia is a nation of jokers, right from the PM, DPM, the SIL, the Education Minister, the police, the judicial system and the racialist ministers. This Khairy fellow opens his mouth for political mileage. There is no Nation Building, only UMNOputra building. This is the only country in the world where the smart students are punished for being smart and the mediocre rewarded. This is the only country that practice apartheid system in the name of nation building.

Jeyklls and Hydes in Malaysia. Are you? (Updated 16 July 2008)

Malaysians in dilemma? So many events and news both real and unreal. Don’t know who to believe? Bombarded with too much spins. These are the quotes, we now hear.

“Give up”, “Fed up”, “Wait and See”, “Lost interest”, “Headache”, “Cannot believe anyone”, “Who to believe ah?”, “Niamah”, “Pening kepala”, “Pening otak”, “Sudah lah”, “Pi mampus”, “Insyallah (God Willing)” or raise your palm and fist and put them together on National tv or www.Youtube.com or www.malaysiakini.com or www.Malaysia-today.net or other blogs.

Why? Because it depends on what you want to perceive and your bias toward your own race, color, religion, party, groups, interests, superiority or plain dumbness.

That makes you something of a Jeykll and Hyde if you can’t differentiate between facts and fictions, good and evil, right and wrong, true or false. Too many Malaysians can’t decide now whether to become Jeykll or whether to become Hyde or when to become Jeykll or when to become Hyde.

Think hard and search your conscience from deep within and “Viola” you can differenciate between Night from Day. Throw out bias towards race, creed, superiority, affiliations, religion and beliefs, greed, power, cronyism etc and then see whether some of the things happening around is right or wrong , true or false, evil or good, facts or fiction.

I read with utmost disgust the statement and rhetoric uttered by Khairy Jamaluddin citing Article 153 of the Constitution to review giving of scholarships to non-bumiputra. First anf foremost, which part of this article says non-bumiputra do not deserve to get 45% of the JPA scholarship? Frankly I strongly believe that if we go strictly by meritocracy, percentage of non-bumiputra getting scholarships should go even much higher than his present quota of 45%, not less.

It is sad that when we are talking about, and moving towards a borderless and flat world, we have racist politicians like Khairy Jamaluddin uttering controvesial statements along this dangerous communal line in the parliament. When are going to catch up?

The government often talks about Malaysia achieving developed nation status by 2020, with the mindset of such politicians, even you add another 20 years to the number, you may still be half way in the race.

More and more young, aspiring and talented Malaysians are moving south to Singapore where the best are rewarded solely based on merits. As I understand, in the law faculty of NUS, close to 30% of the lecturers are from Malaysia.

The government should do more than just mere lip service and political gimmicks in truly moving towards meritocracy, the 45/55 quota is only a small step in the right direction.

If we are serious in seeing Malaysia moving towards a more developed, racilly harmonious state, politicians likes Khairy Jamaluddin should seriously do some soul searching and refrain from such statements. As a young and aspiring politician, don't let the non-Malays despise you, though you may be gaining some cheap political mileage in the short term among the bumiputras.

To Dr Chua's credit, I think he (and probably he alone) has been consistent in pushing back the UMNO Malay Supremacist agenda, like the case with Maybank requiring law firms they deal with to be majority own by Bumi.

MCA members become even more disillusioned by MCA lack of courage and "beggar politics", just like today's resignation by Dr Tan, who has been with MCA for 20 years!

Perhaps after the coming MCA elections, the new leadership can forge a new direction for MCA.

Hanging on to U Must Not Object tailcoats will never bring you any credibility.

With the likes of young immature politicians like Khairy J calling the shots, even above many senior BN leader's head.

MCA should opt out of BN and be a 3rd political force, this way you can be "kingmaker" and have more say in the policy of the govt, be it BN or PR.

The reality is that, even during the Mahathir-Anwar fallout, and we Chinese gave very strong backing to BN to stabilise the government, the end result is that MCA have NEVER penetrate into the inner circle of govt policy-making.

MCA holds none of the critical Ministries and just reduced to waiting for crumbs from UMNO.

Can MCA take its destiny into own hands ? Do they have leaders capable of taking such steps ?

At this juncture, we are more willing to give strong backing to Anwar-led PR govt, as BN and with it MCA, already lost all credibility in our eyes.

Except the opposition MP, why none of the BN back-bencher MP stood up and told off this Khairy Jamaluddin guy? If he could say some nonsential stuff, if MCA wants to regain the respect of the non-Malays, its back-bencher MP should immediately stand up and tell him off.

After all Khairy is only a new MP, if a BN MP can say such thing in the parliament, there is no reason why the BN MCA MP can't do likewise.

Don't let the opposition MP steal the lime light, after all, when it comes to the rights of the non-bumiputras, there is no such thing as BN or opposition.

Dr, why didn't you advise your son to say something?

Dear Dr. Chua,

I think the scholarship suppose to give to those who has the ability. Malaysia need to treasure the talents and to keep those in Malaysia. We are now in the new era where ability come first, but to the quota!!! And in today's world, lots of countries are fighting very hard to attract the talents to their country. Many of them are come out with a very attractive package to attract the talents. Since, we Malaysia produce some much of talents, why can't government keep them to serve the country?? Look at Singapore & Dubai, they know if they want the country to grow, they need to attract lots of talents to country to work. Look at their package that they offer to the talents and compare with our so-called quota system. It is a shameful to the government!!!!!!!
May god bless..................

If Umno is so obsessed with quota, does Umno agree to quota for tax-payers as well?.......non-bumi can generous....say 40% bumi taxpayer against 60% non-bumi.
If Umno can't agree to this arrangement, the Shut the *%$# up.
Futhermore, why MCA is so silent on this Pasir Salak racist in Parliment.

There is no right or wrong in this issue. It's all depend which race you are belong to. Sadly to say, our politic (BN or opposition) is based on racial politic. Unfortunately most malaysian wanted the Malaysia run by this racial politic. The UMNO spoke for the Malays, the DAP spoke for the Chinese and the hindraf spoke for the Indians. As long as we are still function based on this principle, we will have to accept that such problem will persist.
